A Mesa police officer shot a man Wednesday morning after the suspect fired a gun in his direction, police said.
Mesa police responded to a call of shots fired at about 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, March 15, at an apartment complex at 326 N. Standage.
Witnesses provided a description of the shooter and said he was running across University Drive with something in his hands, police said.
Officers found the suspect at 1438 W. University where he fired at police, authorities said.
One of the officers returned fire, striking the suspect at least once, police said.
The man received first aid at the scene and was taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to a Mesa Police Department release, which added a handgun was found near the suspect.
No officers were injured.
“The Mesa Police Department will provide further information after a medical update is received and the suspect’s family has been advised of the situation,” the release stated.
