Officer-involved shooting leaves man dead in Mesa

A 37-year-old man was shot by a Mesa police officer early Sunday morning after authorities said he pulled out a gun following a chase.

The man, who has not been identified, was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said.

The incident began when the Mesa officer attempted to stop the man, who was riding a bicycle near Broadway Road and Cheshire Avenue, according to a release. He did not comply and fled northwest along a canal.

The officer found the man a short distance away in an empty wash. He produced a weapon and pointed it at the officer, police said.

The officer shot the man just after 2 a.m. Sept. 29 near 104th Street and Bramble in Mesa, the release stated.

Mesa police and fire personnel administered emergency first aid before taking the victim to the hospital.

The officer involved was not injured, and police said they are not looking for anyone else.

The East Valley Critical Response Team (Chandler Police Department) is leading an investigation into the shooting.
