Mesa police capture suspects after 2 officer-involved shootings

Posted

Mesa police were involved in two officer-involved shootings on Sunday and Monday.

No officers were injured in either incident. Both suspects were injured and taken to hospitals.

At approximately 5 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 21, Mesa officers were involved in a shooting at Dobson and Baseline roads with a suspect who was wanted for homicide in Albuquerque, NM, and had a felony warrant out of Colorado.

The suspect was later identified as KevinMcKinney, 36, police said. He is in the hospital where he is expected to survive.

Mesa authorities received a call at at around 1:45 p.m. Sunday from the Arizona Department of Public Safety to assist DPS in locating the suspect.

The Albuquerque Police Department notified DPS that a homicide suspect was possibly in Mesa, specifically in the area of Dobson and Baseline, according to Mesa authorities.

The suspect’s vehicle was described as a black Jeep Patriot with a light bar on the top. Albuquerque police also gave a name, photo and description of the suspect and “information that he would shoot it out with police if confronted,” a Mesa Police Department release stated.

DPS requested Mesa police's assistance to locate the suspect and/or his vehicle, and officers from the Mesa Police Department’s Violent Offender Unit arrived in the area, police said.

One officer spotted what he believed to be the suspect’s vehicle in a parking lot. Another officer confirmed the suspect was sitting inside  a retail store, the release stated.

SWAT officers were called in to arrest the suspect.

“When the suspect exited the store and got into the black Patriot, SWAT officers moved in to block the vehicle from fleeing. The suspect refused all commands and tried to leave the scene by ramming the police cars and then driving straight into a business that was open with customers and patrons. This is when the officer-involved shooting occurred,” the release stated.

Authorities said officers were able to get the suspect into custody where he was given first aid.

The suspect was transported to a hospital with serious injuries but is expected to survive.

Later on Sunday at about 11:30 p.m., the Mesa Police Department received a call from a woman who stated that she returned home and noticed her front door was broken.

The woman said she heard someone inside her house, so she did not go inside and called police, a release stated.

Officers arrived and began to set up an Immediate Action Team to approach the house. As they were doing so, a suspect ran out of the house, jumped a wall and attempted to hide in a patio of an adjoining apartment, police said.

The suspect then jumped another wall and hid inside a storage shed  in the 500 block of West 9th Street.

A Mesa Air Unit told officers on the ground that the suspect appeared to be holding a handgun.

When officers tried to approach the shed, several rounds were fired from the shed in their direction police reported.

Officers backed up, and the Chandler SWAT Team arrived to assist. After several hours of trying to get the suspect to come out, a robot and drone were used.

The suspect fired additional shots at both devices, according to police.

“Less lethal measures were deployed and when the suspect began to exit the shed, the officer involved shooting occurred,” police said in the release.

After the shooting, which occurred approximately 3:35 a.m. Monday, Aug. 22, officers took the suspect into custody.

The suspect was treated and transported to a hospital where he is listed in critical condition, police said.
