Edward Johnson, 37, was shot and killed by a Mesa police officer early Sunday morning after authorities said he pulled out a gun following a chase.
Police on Monday identified the victim who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after arrival, police said.
The incident began when the Mesa officer attempted to stop Johnson, who was riding a bicycle near Broadway Road and Cheshire Avenue, according to a release. He did not comply and fled northwest along a canal.
The officer found him a short distance away in an empty wash. He produced a weapon and pointed it at the officer, police said.
The officer shot Johnson just after 2 a.m. Sept. 29 near 104th Street and Bramble in Mesa, the release stated.
Mesa police and fire personnel administered emergency first aid before taking the victim to the hospital.
The officer involved was not injured, and police said they are not looking for anyone else.
The East Valley Critical Response Team (Chandler Police Department) is leading an investigation into the shooting.
