The Arizona Museum of Natural History recently announced Gavin McCullough has been appointed as its new curator of natural history.
McCullough has been an essential member of the museum’s staff since 2004, most recently working as paleontology collections specialist, according to a release.
McCullough has been instrumental in several significant paleontological contributions, including numerous discoveries and scientific collaborations, it states.
“He has contributed to our knowledge of Arizona’s prehistory with research on Arizona’s first reported ankylosaurid dinosaur and was the discoverer of the state’s first reported dinosaur eggshell material. His field research spans multiple geological periods and localities, notably in South Dakota, Arizona and Sonora, Mexico,” according to the release
“Gavin’s deep expertise, exceptional research skills and dedication to paleontology made him an outstanding candidate in a highly competitive national search,” Dr. Robert McCord, chief curator at AZMNH, said in the release. “We are confident that Gavin will further elevate AZMNH’s profile in natural history research and public education.”
In his role as curator of natural history, McCullough will oversee AZMNH’s natural history collections, lead research initiatives and enhance public engagement through educational programs and exhibits.
“It’s an incredible honor to step into this position,” McCullough said in the release. “I’m committed to continuing the museum’s tradition of excellence in research and public education and fostering greater public engagement to inspire the next generation of scientists.”
McCullough has a master of science degree in paleontology from the South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and is a board member of the Arizona-Nevada Academy of Science.
Arizona Museum of Natural History, 53 N. Macdonald in Mesa, is open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday.
