Drivers will see changes Monday along Gilbert Road at the Salt River crossing.
Maricopa County Department of Transportation crews on Monday, Feb. 6, will gradually shift the two southbound lanes traveling from State Route 87 to a single lane of travel on Gilbert Road at the Salt River, officials said in a release.
Northbound travel on Gilbert Road will continue with the one-lane restriction already in place.
The configuration of sharing the existing road with one lane of travel each way will be in effect for two years until traffic is switched onto the new bridge, MCDOT officials said.
There also will be a new paved section of Gilbert Road at the low water crossing at the Salt River to allow for bridge construction, according to the county.
The Maricopa County Department of Transportation, in cooperation with the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community and the City of Mesa, is constructing the bridge over the Salt River.
The new four-lane Gilbert Road bridge will replace the existing two-lane bridge and low water crossing, which can become flooded during high water flows in the Salt River.
Gilbert Road bridge construction is anticipated to be completed in 2025.
