Flute group to host art, music discussion at Mesa Arts Center
Posted
Central Arizona Flute Ensemble will host “Listen, Look, Engage! CAFE Flutes and MCA Artists in Concert,” an interdisciplinary art/music event, at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 7, in the Piper Repertory Theater at Mesa Art Center, 1 E. Main St.
The seven-member flute choir enriches, enlightens and inspires central Arizona residents by presenting interactive concerts and educational programs that showcase the diverse instruments in the flute family, according to a release.
CAFE Flutes will perform a variety of musical styles during the first half of this concert in the Piper Repertory Theater. After intermission, they will perform four pieces of music that connect with a projected image of four artworks currently on display in the Mesa Contemporary Art Museum. The audience will experience the juxtaposition of art with live music.
After each piece, Arts Advocate Jill Bernstein will lead the audience in a discussion to build meaning, create dialogue, and offer commentary about how artists and composers express their ideas, and how audiences process them. MCA artists Bill Dambrova, Abbey Messmer, Bobby Zokaites, and Colleen Quigley will be on hand to provide insights about their creative process. Following the concert, participants are invited to tour the MCA Museum with the exhibiting artists.
“Music and art have a lot in common,” CAFE President Leslie Etzel said in the release. “We will explore connection points such as subject, mood, style, repetition, and storytelling. This event invites participants to interact with the artists and musicians to get a close-up look at the creative process.”
“I Iove the idea of making the experience of looking and listening a sensorial event,” artist Colleen Quigley said in the release. “I have been developing new installations for the show and can’t wait to see what the musicians come up with when that image is projected.”
The event is made possible by a grant from the Mesa Arts Center Foundation. General admission tickets cost $25 and are available through the MAC Box Office at boxoffice.mesaartscenter.com.
