Authorities identify Mesa homicide suspect following shooting standoff

A 46-year-old man was arrested May 12 in connection with a recent homicide in Mesa and weapons violations.
Joseph Pratt, 46, is in custody following a standoff in Globe where he barricaded himself in a home and fired dozens of shots at law enforcement personnel who were trying to apprehend him, according to an official with the U.S. Marshals Service.
Pratt was arrested in connection with a March 3 homicide near Alma School Road and University Drive in Mesa. Another suspect in the case was arrested earlier this month.
Pratt was found on the afternoon of May 12 near Russell Road in Globe by members of the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force.
“As officers approached to make contact, Pratt shot at officers, then barricaded himself inside of a residence where he continued to fire dozens more with no regard for the safety of the community,” the U.S. Marshals Service official stated in a release.
Task Force members, in coordination with Mesa Police Department SWAT, Apache Junction SWAT, Department of Public Safety SWAT, Globe Police Department and Gila County Sheriff’s Office, worked “to negotiate a peaceful surrender,” the release stated.
“Pratt failed to comply with orders to exit the residence and was ultimately taken into custody through the use of less-than-lethal munitions, and subsequently transported to a local hospital to be assessed and treated,” according to the release.
No officers or members of the community were injured, officials said, adding an investigation continues.
