The Mesa Arts Center Foundation recently announced the closure of The Store as of May 30.
The decision was made by the Mesa Arts Center Foundation board in collaboration with Mesa Arts Center leadership, following a review of the strategic plan focused on the next era of growth, evolving community needs and strategy for impact, according to a release at the art center’s website.
The Store, 1 E. Main St., operated as an artist cooperative in space leased from Mesa Arts Center to the Mesa Arts Center Foundation.
“This decision follows a thoughtful evaluation of how best to meet evolving community needs. As we look ahead to the next 20 years, we look at how Mesa Arts Center’s footprint can be leveraged strategically to serve our mission and maximize community impact,” the release states.
A change.org petition calling on the city of Mesa and the Mesa Arts Center Foundation to reverse the closure of the store at the Mesa Arts Center has more than 50 signatures, with support from local artists and residents.
