While specific dollar amonths were not deliniated by the Cupertino, California-based company, the company said in a press release on Monday that its data center operations in Arizona would be expanded and it would increase funding for the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. project in north Phoenix.
The TSMC project would be part of an increase in Apple's U.S. Advanced Manufacturing Fund from $5 billion to to $10 billion. The funds are among myriad plans Apple has for the next several years to put money into advanced manufacturing and research and development. It includes a new product line for servers in Houston, expansion of data centers across the U.S., and money for an Apple Manufacturing Academy in Detroit.
“We are bullish on the future of American innovation, and we’re proud to build on our long-standing U.S. investments with this $500 billion commitment to our country’s future,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, said in the press release.
TSMC is one of Apple's biggest suppliers of chips, making silicon for all the company's devices. It will be the north Phoenix fab's largest customer.
