81-year-old kayaker drowns in Mesa section of Salt River

Posted

An 81-year-old kayaker drowned Saturday in the Salt River in Mesa, authorities said.

Lake patrol deputies from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office responded to the Pebble Beach area of the river about 11:50 a.m. Saturday, March 18, after receiving a call about a possible drowning.

The 911 caller said the man had fallen off his kayak and did not resurface.

He was pulled from the water by other kayakers, who administered first aid, according to MCSO.

When lake patrol deputies arrived, they took over first aid; however, the kayaker later was pronounced dead by medical personnel, MCSO officials said.

Lake patrol detectives have taken over the investigation.
