History of Goodyear Farms Cemetery
During the early part of Arizona’s statehood, vast acres of farm fields sprung to life in this part of the Valley. During World War I, the demand for cotton surged. Thousands of migrant workers from Mexico were brought in to work these farm fields. When the 1918 Spanish flu pandemic struck, Goodyear Farms established this cemetery to bury the farmworkers and their families who died from the flu. Over the years, the cemetery has served as a final resting place for Goodyear Farms workers and their descendants. This historical site is preserved and cared for by the city of Avondale, which is committed to preserving the history of the pioneers who transformed the arid desert into agricultural fields.
