Summit Medical Group Arizona announces new specialty, providers

Summit Medical Group Arizona (SMGAZ) announced the start of pain management services and welcomes three new multispecialty providers: Ross Barker, DO joins as SMGAZ’s first pain management specialist; Amanda Andersen, MD, joins Summit Medical the group’s Internal medicine and pediatric teams; and Toni Sharon, FNP, is a new family nurse practitioner in internal medicine.

As part of its commitment to improving patients’ quality of life, SMGAZ recently added pain management services at 5620 W. Thunderbird Road, Suite G-2, Glendale. The new department, which will be led by Dr. Barker, offers patients assorted outpatient procedures, treating a wide range of pain and pain syndromes, including arthritis pain, pinched nerves, and other joint and somatic pain treatments.

Pain management is the medical specialty involving treatment for short-term pain, long-term pain, or ongoing (chronic) pain. The goal of pain management is to prevent and ease pain to improve quality of life during treatment and the healing process.

Dr. Barker earned his medical degree from University of New England College of Osteopathic Medicine.  He completed his residency at Tufts University School of Medicine, St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston, MA. He then went on to complete his Fellowship at Harvard Medical School and received a dual board certification in anesthesiology and pain management.

Dr. Andersen, MD, joins SMGAZ’s internal medicine and pediatric teams. She has special interest in the transition of pediatric to adult care. As a general practitioner, Dr. Andersen diagnoses and treats both common and complicated primary care conditions. Dr. Andersen earned her medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield and completed her residency at University of Arizona College of Medicine in Phoenix. 

She is located in two SMGAZ offices; Sunny Internal Medicine and Pediatrics on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3400 N. Dysart Road, Suite G127 in Avondale and Estrella Internal Medicine and Pediatrics on Wednesdays and Fridays at 14541 W. Indian School Road, Suite 600 in Goodyear.

Toni Sharon, FNP, also joins SMGAZ’s internal medicine department. She earned her Master of Science in Nursing at Grand Canyon University.
