COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Southwest Valley to celebrate Veterans Day virtually
Posted
Independent Newsmedia
Goodyear and Avondale are planning special tributes for Veterans Day this year, despite restrictions on how events are handled.
Because of social distancing and other COVID-19 requirements, the events scheduled Wednesday, Nov. 11, will look a little different.
Here’s what’s happening to honor Southwest Valley residents who served:
Goodyear tribute
Goodyear is celebrating those who served in three ways.
The city has 1,000 custom “thank you” signs available for pick up from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays at City Hall, 190 N. Litchfield Road, and the Goodyear Recreation Office, 3075 N. Litchfield Road.
Residents also may send a 10-second video thanking veterans for their service and sharing why Veterans Day is important to you for possible inclusion in a Veterans Day tribute to be shared on social media.
Videos should be emailed to veterans@goodyearaz.gov by Thursday, Nov. 1.
Ceremony, Fun Run
The city of Avondale and Estrella Mountain Community College are partnering on the seventh annual Veterans Day Ceremony and Fun Run.
This year, the 5-kilometer run and walk is being held virtually at 7:30 a.m. Nov. 11. Participants can still register as they have in the past, but participate in the virtual run. Registration is $11.11 for veterans and $25 for the general public. Register at estrallamountain.edu/vetfunrun.
In-person events will include a Warrior’s Breakfast at 8:45 a.m. at Avondale City Hall, 11465 Civic Center Drive, followed by a 9 a.m. Veteran Appreciation Ceremony at City Hall open to veterans, active-duty and retired military, their families and community members.
