Pitts' key plays against Desert Ridge produce player of week win

Posted

The Week 4 football player of the week poll was up for two weeks and Liberty junior Shane Pitts led for most of that time frame.

The safety/kicker won what turned out to be a two-man contest for the vote, holding off Shadow Ridge senior tailback Michael Clark.

In the Lions' 30-28 thriller over Mesa Desert Ridge on Sept. 13, Pitts made 11 tackles, forced a late fumble in red zone to preserve the lead, liked the game-wining field goal and three of four extra points. He finished with 222 votes – of  a total of 573 votes cast – to win the poll.

Clark was second with 138 votes for his performance in the Stallions' 43-14 pounding of neighborhood rival Willow Canyon.

He finished with 32 carries for 261 yards and four touchdowns.

Cactus senior safety/tailback Nicc Quinones placed third with 81 votes. In the Cobras' 41-21 cruise against Estrella Foothills, Quinones rushed for 52 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries, and made an interception and eight tackles on defense.

For the fourth straight year, player of the week honorees, including Pitts will win more than bragging rights.
