Reader has idea for bringing fun back to the Fourth

Posted

We need to reimage 4th of July celebrations. No more parades, outdoor barbeques, no community or church ball games or Little League tournaments. Extreme heat, pollution warnings, cancerous UV light, forest/brush fires killed all the fun.

When was the last time the Independent published a list of community events and parades for July 4th?

I remember when local churches held ice cream socials. Why not have the community host on July 4th a cartoon festival and ice cream social? Keep the charity fundraisers and gambling out. For a couple of bucks  you get a hot dog, an ice cream, pop, coffee, water or tea, maybe a cookie or cupcake, and watch old-time cartoons, like “Rocky and Bullwinkle,” “George of the Jungle,” “Loony Tunes.”

Possibly watch a ball game on a wide-screen TV.  Decorate for July 4th, and run the event from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. Use a community center and make it a fun day.
