Preliminary results for the Legislative District 23 State Senate race have been posted. At 10:34 a.m. on Thursday, Nov. 7, incumbents Michele Peña and Mariana Sandoval leading the pack in a race for two available seats.
The candidates vying for the positions will have the chance to sponsor and pass legislation, influence public policy, set state spending priorities, and address key issues for the communities they represent.
The three candidates are in the race are:
Rep. Michele Peña: The Republican incumbent, holding 36.19% of the vote who currently serves in the Arizona State House after winning a seat in the 2022 elections through a successful write-in campaign. Peña, an administrative assistant for a farming company serves on the Land, Agriculture & Rural Affairs, Education, and Regulatory Affairs committees.
Rep. Mariana Sandoval: A Democrat incumbent, holding 32.87% of the vote who was elected to the State House in 2022. A paralegal with the Arizona Attorney General's Office and a member of the Agua Fria Union High School District governing board, Sandoval also serves on the Land, Agriculture & Rural Affairs and Ways & Means committees.
Matias Rosales: A Democrat candidate, holding 30.93% of the vote is a Realtor and current Vice Mayor of San Luis. Rosales has also served as a city council member and as president of Wardlow Wireless. He is a member of the Greater Yuma Port Authority and has been appointed by former Governor Doug Ducey to Arizona's Real Estate Advisory Board.
The candidates are competing for two seats in the Arizona House of Representatives, where they will serve two-year terms, tackling a wide array of issues critical to their constituents, including education, agriculture, and rural affairs.
As the results continue to come in, the race remains uncalled, with fluctuations in vote counts that will be finalized in the coming days.
