The City of Litchfield Park is offering the 2025 Citizen's Leadership Academy, a free program designed to educate residents about local government operations. This initiative provides participants with a detailed understanding of various city departments and their functions.
The academy includes courses covering topics vital to the function of local government:
Government Overview: Participants will learn about the structures of federal, state, county, and local governments, as well as the city charter and the role of the mayor.
Public Finance: This session explores the city’s budget, revenue sources, and the differences between general and special revenue funds.
Engineering and Community Development Services: Attendees will gain insights into the general plan, planning and zoning processes, and building safety regulations.
Litchfield Square and La Loma Hilltop Development: This course covers the history and current status of key local developments, including the library and performing arts center.
Public Safety: Participants will learn about the operations of local police and fire departments.
Public Works: This session focuses on infrastructure maintenance, including pavement preservation and landscaping.
Water & Sewer: Attendees will discuss conservation efforts and the management of water and sewer services.
Orientation for the academy is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2025. Class sizes are limited to 25 participants, with a minimum of 15 required. To participate, individuals must be at least 21 years old and residents of Litchfield Park, committing to at least 14 hours of attendance for public recognition.
Registration opens on Friday, Nov. 1, and closes on Friday, Jan. 31. Residents can register online by completing the form available on the city's website.
