Litchfield Park flag-raising to honor Navy’s 245th birthday

The city of Litchfield Park will hold a virtual flag-raising at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 13 in honor of the U.S. Navy’s 245th birthday.
Residents are invited to watch via the city’s Facebook page, @CityofLitchfieldPark, when Mayor Thomas L. Schoaf presents a proclamation in honor of the event.

The Navy traces its origins to the Revolutionary War and the Continental Navy, formed Oct. 13, 1775, when the Continental Congress purchased two armed ships to attack British supply ships to keep supplies from reaching British soldiers in the colonies.
The Continental Navy’s first overseas expedition got under way on Feb. 17, 1776, a squadron of eight vessels left Delaware with orders to clear the Chesapeake Bay and the coasts of Virginia and the Carolinas of British raiders.
Mission complete, they headed to the Bahamas, where they landed a force of 300 sailors and Marines, on March 3, storming storms Forts Nassau and Montagu, and occupying New Providence Island, where they captured 73 cannons, mortars and a large quantity of munitions and carried them back to the Continental Army.
