On Nov. 1, communities across the country will celebrate Extra Mile Day, a day dedicated to recognizing the contributions of volunteers who go above and beyond in their service.

This year, 506 cities have officially declared Extra Mile Day, with mayors from all 50 states set to honor the individuals and organizations making a difference in their communities.

Among those participating are Mayor Thomas Schoaf of Litchfield Park and Mayor Joe Pizzillo of Goodyear, both recognizing the local volunteers who dedicate their time and resources.

Extra Mile Day, initiated in 2009 with 23 cities, has grown into a nationwide movement supported by Extra Mile America. The initiative highlights the impact of volunteerism and encourages individuals to embody the spirit of "going the extra mile" in their daily lives.

Shawn Anderson, founder of Extra Mile Day, emphasizes that acts of kindness can take many forms.

“It's the volunteer who makes time to read to a group of seniors at the Senior's center; it’s the parent who bakes cookies to raise money for the PTA; it’s the group who gives time on weekends to pick up litter; it’s the volunteer helping abandoned pets find loving homes. It’s these people - and hundreds of others - who unselfishly add value to our communities,” said Anderson. 

 Extra Mile Day serves as a reminder of the potential for everyday change Anderson said, the philosophy behind "going the extra mile" promotes engagement in creating positive change.

With more than 500 cities participating, Anderson said Extra Mile Day is a call to action for sustained engagement and service, inspiring individuals to make an impact in their communities and beyond.
