Kiwanis in-person/virtual run kicks off Saturday in Litchfield Park

Proceeds will go to nonprofit Friends of the Rec

Kiwanis Club of Litchfield’s 37th annual 10K, 5K, 1 Mile Walk/Run will be held as a hybrid event this year, with runners and walkers participating in person Saturday, Feb. 27, and others participating virtually through March 27.

The Kiwanis-sponsored event is expected to draw about 300 participants, Litchfield Park Community & Recreation Services Director Tricia Kramer said.

For more information or to register, visit the city’s website, litchfield-park.org, active.com or follow links from the Litchfield Park Special Events page, @EventsLP, on Facebook.

Registration forms also may be picked up at the Litchfield Park Recreation Center, 100 S. Old Litchfield Road.

Entry fees range from $20 to $30.

Proceeds from the event will go to the Friends of the Rec, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that contributes thousands of dollars annually to special events, youth sports, aquatics and preschool programs in Litchfield Park.

In-person  event

On Saturday, participants will begin and end their treks at the Litchfield Park Recreation Center.

At 5:30 a.m. Saturday, city Public Works staff will begin chalking out the race courses and setting up cones and barricades to delineate each course and keep runners safe from traffic.

The southbound lanes of Old Litchfield Road running south of Wigwam Boulevard to the south parking lot of the Litchfield Park Recreation Center will be closed from 5:30 a.m. until noon.

The event will feature three competitive races — 10K, 5K and 1-mile runs. During a post-race awards ceremony, the top three male and female finishers in each race’s age group will receive medals, and the overall male and female winners in each run will receive special recognition plaques.

The event also will include a non-competitive 1-mile fun run/walk and Healthy Classroom Challenge, with all participants receiving ribbons.

As with other in-person events in the city, COVID-19 safety measures will be in place Saturday.

Race staff and participants will be required to undergo non-contact forehead temperature checks when they arrive.

Staff will wear wristbands to confirm they passed their screenings, and race participants will receive their race bibs after successful temperature checks.

Face coverings will be required for everyone at the event, except when they are eating, hydrating or running, Ms. Kramer said, noting that race participants who decline to comply will be asked to leave the event and will not receive a refund.

Waved starts will limit the number of people gathered at any given time, with a maximum of 10 runners per wave. Race bibs provided by the timing company will include chips that record each runner's  true time.

Waves for the 10K competitive run will begin at 7:30 a.m., followed by waves for the fun run/walk and Healthy Classroom Challenge at 8, the 5K competitive run at 9 and the 1-mile competitive run at  9:45.

An official race T-shirt and one ticket for prize giveaways will be provided to each pre-registered race participant. Walk-up registrants will be provided race T-shirts and sizes based on availability at the time of their registration.

Virtual event

The virtual event, which runs Feb. 27 to March 27, will follow the same format and have the same entry fees as the in-person event, with three competitive runs and one non-competitive run/walk.

Particpants can run/walk wherever they choose, and each pre-registered participant will receive an official race shirt and medal or ribbon.
