Junior lifeguard training teaches safety and leadership

Youth ages 11 to 14 can dive into lifesaving skills this May through a Junior Lifeguard Training program designed to teach aquatic safety, rescue techniques, CPR, First Aid and leadership.

The program emphasizes teamwork while preparing participants to assist with swim lessons and open swim as summer volunteers. Upon completion, students may earn additional training and volunteer hours by shadowing certified lifeguards.

Classes run May 12–15, Monday through Thursday, from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Buckeye Aquatic Center, 207 N. 9th St., with sessions also held at the Dr. Saide Recreation Center, 1003 E. Eason Ave.

Participants must be able to swim 25 yards continuously, float on their back for 30 seconds, tread water for one minute, and swim 10 feet underwater.

The program fee is $60 for residents and $70 for non-residents.
