LEARN MORE
The Junior Golf Association of Arizona is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 1983 to educate, motivate and inspire Arizona’s youth through golf, and the lessons and life skills inherent to the game. JGAA hosts competitive events, develops programs for local schools, assists golf courses with junior programs, conducts college prep seminars and etiquette clinics. Junior ambassador and guest speaker programs give JGAA students the opportunity to learn, develop and adopt successful habits and practices on and off the golf course from a collection of prominent, civic-minded community and business leaders. JGAA also awards the Tres Arnold and John Wolfinger Memorial College Scholarships to two high school senior members. For more information, visit www.jgaa.org or call 602-944-6168.
Golf enthusiasts who want to introduce their littles to the sport can register them for the Junior Golf Association of Arizona’s Itty Bitty Open.
The free event scheduled for Saturday, Jan. 16, at 21 locations across the Valley, is open to children ages 3 to 5.
Participating West Valley sites include:
• Falcon Park, 15050 W. Indian School Road, Goodyear;
• Legend at Arrowhead Golf Club, 21027 N. 67th Ave,, Glendale;
• Rio Vista Community Center, 8866 W. Thunderbird Road, Peoria; and
• Surprise Stadium, 15930 N. Bullard Ave., Surprise.
Parents can register pint-sized players for one of three clinic times — 9, 10 and 11 a.m. Both juniors and their parents will have a chance to learn basic skills of golf from qualified PGA and LPGA professionals during the clinics.
Afterward, the kids will participate in non-competitive golf games and tournaments. Each young golfer will receive a set of plastic golf clubs (right handed only), balls, a bag and a visor. Participants are asked to leave their own clubs at home. An adult “caddie” must accompany each golfer, according to a JGAA news release.
“Itty Bitty Open is a great way for parents to introduce their children to the game of golf,” JGAA Executive Director Scott McNevin said. “In fact, after 33 years, adults who attended Itty Bitty Open decades ago are now bringing their kids, so the second generation is already here.”
A special contest with prizes will be held at each session for the “Best Dressed Golfer and Caddie Team.” Anything goes: classic golf fashion; contemporary golf fashion; or any unique golf duds that may come to mind. All winners will receive a trophy.
Registration deadline is Jan. 11, and families are asked to register at jgaa.org/membership/itty-bitty-open/# as soon as possible as space is limited, For more information, call 602-944-6168.
