Grijalva, Butierez debate ahead of CD7 election

The two nominees vying to replace the late U.S. Rep. Raúl Grijalva will meet on stage Aug. 26 for a televised debate ahead of the Sept. 23 special general election in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District.

Democrat Adelita Grijalva and Republican Daniel Francis Butierez Sr. advanced from their parties’ primaries and will take part in the debate at 6 p.m. Tuesday, hosted by the Arizona Media Association, Citizens Clean Elections Commission, RIESTER and Arizona Public Media. Maricopa County Elections begins mailing ballots and opening early voting the following day, Aug. 27.

Unofficial county results show Grijalva, chair of the Pima County Board of Supervisors and daughter of the longtime congressman, won the Democratic primary with 2,739 ballots, or 52.95% of the vote. Butierez, a small business owner, led Republicans with 824 ballots, or 46.29%.
