The city’s Arts and Culture Commission will honor the winners of its annual Mayor Select Art Program during a reception Thursday, May 8, at Goodyear City Hall.
The juried competition, sponsored by Palm Valley Pediatric Dentistry, showcases the original artwork of middle and high school students who live in Goodyear. Winning students will receive scholarships, ribbons and Best of Show recognition during the ceremony, which runs from 5 to 6:30 p.m. at 1900 N. Civic Square.
According to a city press release, the Mayor Select Art Program is designed to highlight the talent of young artists in a gallery-like setting at Goodyear Civic Square.
The competition is open to students in ninth through 12th grade who live or attend school in Goodyear. Students may submit up to three artworks in one of three categories: Drawing and Painting, Photography and Digital Art, and 3D and Mixed Media. Scholarships will be awarded to the top entries in each category.
First-place winners will receive $250, and runners-up will earn $150. One "Best of Show" winner will receive a $600 scholarship. Ribbons will also be awarded for honorable mentions.
All selected artwork will be displayed in a public exhibition.
A panel of jurors, including arts professionals, city staff and academic representatives, judged submissions based on presentation, originality, artistic quality and composition. Each student was allowed to submit up to three original works that had not been previously entered.
