Gil (Babe) Weller

Posted

Gil, born March 20, 1927, to Charles and Rose Weller in Chicago, Illinois and passed away May 14, 2021 at his home in Sun City West, Arizona.
Devoted husband, father, grandfather and friend to everyone he met. A man who enjoyed 94 years spreading joy and love, to so many.
Gil was preceded in death by his sisters, Charlene, Sylvia, Rita and Dee; as well as his brother, Ray. He is survived by his devoted wife of 73 years, Betty; two sons, Chuck and Steve; and daughter, Karen. He also leaves behind many loving grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
As a young man, Gil was one of the most recognized golf caddies (under the name Eddie) in the Chicago area. He often worked PGA Tour events at the area’s best courses.
He later served as a member of the United States Coast Guard during World War II. After his discharge, he began a 35-year career at Peoples Gas Light and Coke Company in Chicago. Gil retired in 1978 to Sarasota and Clearwater, Florida.
Several years later, he and Betty moved to Sun City West, Arizona, where Gil served with the Sun City Pride and teamed with Dan Ford, to establish the “Ride with the Prides,” a partnership with Holland America to allow residents an opportunity to travel internationally. He also enjoyed his second love, sports. Gil won countless championships at the annual family golf tournament, and was an avid baseball fan, becoming an historian of the game. During a trip to the Hall of Fame, he once held a number of baseball’s most treasured artifacts, including Babe Ruth’s spikes and bat.
Gil was always a man who brought joy to others. Never one to talk about his pain or troubles, Gil instilled humor and optimism into every conversation. But what separates Gil from most, was his unwavering love of his bride of 73 years. Betty and Gil were the couple who set the example of what marriage is all about.
A very private funeral is planned, as his remains will be laid to rest at the Sunland Memorial Park in Arizona.
