Children in need can get free meals at Southwest Valley Family YMCA, 2919 N. Litchfield Road, Goodyear, through Friday, July 31.

Civitan Foundation, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to enriching the lives of children and adults with intellectual disabilities through various programs and employment services, will distribute meals to children in need at nine Arizona locations this summer as part of the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP). All meals will be prepared by Civitan’s ‘Cook-er-y,’ a culinary program at Civitan Village which is fully comprised of chefs with disabilities.

“There are many more locations handing out food through SFSP, but our locations are especially unique because two at-risk groups, the special needs community and underserved youth, are truly serving one other,” Cook-er-y’s culinary director Kevin Gregg stated in a news release. “Thousands of youth need food during these challenging times, and our differently abled members need job support. It’s a perfect match.”

The SFSP is a federally funded program administered by the Arizona Department of Education Health and Nutrition Services Division that provides free and healthy meals to youth in Arizona all summer long. Meals will be provided to all eligible children, ages 18 and under, free of charge.

To be eligible to receive free meals, children must meet the income guidelines for reduced-price meals in the National School Lunch Program.

“Schools letting out for the summer can mean an extra burden on parents less fortunate who rely on free school lunch programs to feed their kids,” Civitan Foundation CEO Dawn Trapp stated. “There are nearly 600,000 students receiving free or reduced-price school meals in Arizona that will be eligible for these benefits, and our special needs members are proud to serve them.”
