While there are fire bans and social distancing requirements, White Tank Mountain Regional Park is open for fun.

The park, located about 20 miles northwest of Goodyear at 20304 W. White Tank Mountain Road, Waddell, will host a Full Moon Walk on Mule Deer Trail 7-8:45 p.m. Friday, June 5.

The moderate 2-mile hike on Mule Deer Trail allows visitors to see the desert in a different light -- by moonlight -- during a walk through the Sonoran Desert. Close-toed shoes are recommended, and always bring water. Flashlights are optional.

Dogs are welcome to remain at home.

A fire ban is in effect at White Tank Mountain Regional Park, and the Nature Center is currently closed.

The Waterfall Trailhead, including the parking lot and restrooms, are closed to help ensure safe social-distancing. Mesquite Trailhead is open.

When parking restrictions are in place, do not park along the roadway or create parking spots.

Due to COVID-19, the park hours have been changed. Until further notice, hours are 5 a.m.-8 p.m. Sunday through Saturday.

Nearly 30,000 acres makes White Tank Mountain Regional Park the largest regional park in Maricopa County.

The range, deeply serrated with ridges and canyons, rises sharply from its base to peak at over 4,000 feet. Infrequent heavy rains cause flash floodwaters to plunge through the canyons and pour onto the plain, according to Maricopa County Parks and Recreation. These torrential flows, pouring down chutes and dropping off ledges, have scoured out a series of depressions, or tanks, in the white granite rock below, thus giving the mountains their name.
