Litchfield Park prepares for annual fishing derby

Posted

The City of Litchfield Park will host its annual Trout Fishing Derby on Saturday, Jan. 25, 2025, at Tierra Verde Lake. The event will feature the stocking of 750 pounds of rainbow trout, providing anglers of all ages the chance to fish for prizes in this family-friendly event.

The derby will run from 7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. with two fishing sessions available. The morning competitive session will run from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. and the afternoon recreational session will run from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

After the morning session trophies will be awarded for the largest, longest, and shortest trout caught in several age groups in a ceremony held from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

Tricia Kramer the Director of Community and Recreational Services for Litchfield Park said that all of the competitive slots had been filled as of Jan. 9 but the later slots for recreational fishing still had available spaces.

Online registration is required, and no walk-up registration will be available. A fee will be charged per space, with each registrant receiving a 10-foot fishing space for up to four people. Spaces will be assigned in order of registration.

Kyle Ames, Litchfield Park’s Director of Public works said he is working on restoring grass that has been torn up by waterfowl that stay in the lake during winter months to maximize the amount of fishing spaces available before the tournament.

Fishing will be restricted to two lines per person and one hook per line. Barbed hooks are prohibited.

Public parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis along the streets near Tierra Verde Lake and in the public parking lot across the street at Staggs Park.

Visit litchfieldpark.gov for more information and to register.
