When Tyrone Ward pushed a stranger who used a wheelchair down the airport to his gate, he did it to help a human in need. The good deed paid off when he found out the man he helped push down the ramp and into his seat next to him was the late-co founder of P.F. Changs, Tom Franks.
Franks hooked up Ward with a mentor in the retail entertainment space to help with his boutique entertainment concept, which has won accolades for its design.
“This facility is 25,000-square-feet, but we have 60,000-square-feet worth of entertainment in here,” Ward said. “So, it's the first in the industry where you can come in, and it gives you an illusion that this place is bigger than it actually is by the way it's designed.”
Boutique retail spaces like gyms with personal programming are designed to increase client share and profitability. The model worked for companies like Orange Theory Fitness and F45 over big box gyms.
Owynn's World of Adventure in Litchfield Park is the same concept, a personalized experience with less overhead than its big-box competitors like Main Event and Dave & Buster's, who don’t offer personalization.
Owynn’s World comes with laser tag, virtual reality areas, a game cinema, one playroom for girls and one for boys, a bevy of arcade games, and a rope obstacle course above the games. The wall-to-wall fun also comes with energetic employees/programmers who are the adventure world's lifeblood.
“We brought through about 60 candidates … had a table just across here, chairs all the way around, sat them with a number in a chair, they thought they were doing an interview,” Ward said. “I would just play games, some trust games, some life skills stuff, it was just fun. They were like, wow that was an interview?
Ward said it brings out the personality. Personality is vitally essential, his father died in 2015 so he knew the importance of passing a lasting love to his daughter. The business is named after his daughter Owynn, so it has to be remarkable.
“With her name, that was more than dedication, because that's her real name,” he said. “And that's a real image that's being tossed around and created, and that is going to be her legacy. So we had to make sure that we did it right. And we do stay motivated.”
