Goodyear to host a Juneteenth celebration

The city of Goodyear will kick off Juneteenth festivities with the city’s second inaugural celebration of the oldest African American holiday.
Goodyear recreation campus — specifically 420 South Estrella Parkway — will be the site for the three-hour celebration on Monday, June 19. The event starts at 6 p.m. and continues through 9 p.m.
With a stimulating lineup of performances and activities, the Juneteenth event promises an exceptional experience for attendees. Live performances include:
Don Williams & Co. (Jazz/Blues)
Pretty Precise Step Team
40+ Double Dutch Club
African dance & drumline
Sandra Bassett (Motown)
The event will feature educational and insightful speeches, live performances and interactive activities.
Food trucks, and a photo both will be at the event for patrons to use. The Phoenix Center for the Arts will provide supplies for patrons to create personalized frames for individual pictures.
Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of enslaved people in the United States at the end of the Civil War. For more than 150 years, African American communities across the country have observed this holiday in a blend of two words — “June” and “nineteenth” — with its origins dating back to 1865.
