Goodyear to live-stream Shakespeare in the Park

Event features local, professional performers

Goodyear’s 2021 Shakespeare in the Park event initially was supposed to be a two-day in-person celebration of the Bard at Goodyear Community Park, but because of COVID-19 safety concerns it will be presented virtually at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21.

“We’re thrilled to be offering this arts and culture experience virtually,” Goodyear Arts and Culture Coordinator Guylene Ozlanski said. “It provides an opportunity for residents to enjoy the show from the comforts of home, and by making it so convenient to ‘attend,’ we hope it reaches residents who haven’t experience one of these events before.”

The free performance, in partnership with the West Valley Arts Council and Seek First Entertainment, will stream live at and on the city’s Facebook page, @goodyearazgov.

Theme for the show is “Love” and its many forms.

Conceived and directed by Kevvin Taylor of Seek First, the event will include an intergenerational cast of community members and professional actors presenting scenes in a contemporary format  from such works as “Romeo and Juliet,” “As You Like It,” “Macbeth” and “Taming of the Shrew,” among others.

“Off a Globe Theatre-inspired backdrop, with a live DJ and host as the guiding light, we invite you to journey to a Shakespearean theatrical experience,” Seek First shared on its website. “In the open-air amphitheater at the beautiful Bullard Wash Park in Goodyear, Arizona, come be inspired by the Heroines, the female characters in Shakespeare’s plays; and in an open mic format, fall in love with Shakespeare’s Sonnets, a one-stanza, 14-line poem, delivered by Arizona’s diverse community of spoken word artists.”
