Goodyear student wins Ethical Torch scholarship

Nicole Achback of Estrella Foothills High School in Goodyear is among five Arizona students awarded scholarships in the Better Business Bureau Serving the Pacific Southwest’s annual Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship competition.
Ms. Achback will receive $1,250 for her second-place essay, “The Importance of Ethics and Integrity in our Community.”
In her essay, Ms. Achback provides an example of doing the right thing when competing against a friend in a competition with only one winner.
“Prior to submitting our entries, he showed me his work to check for errors. Upon inspection, I noticed he had filled out the forms wrong and could be disqualified by default before his work even made it to the judges,” she wrote. “At this moment I was faced with a decision: show my friend his error and risk losing the competition or tell him his submission was perfect and have a higher chance of winning.”
Held annually, the contest encourages students to write an essay about doing the right thing when they are faced with an ethical dilemma. This year’s scholarships were sponsored by Swiss America and Kiwanis Club.

“We chose to support BBB’s Ethical Torch Essay Scholarship because we are united in our belief that doing the right thing is always the right thing to do,” Swiss America Vice President and Treasurer Bronwin Barilla said in a prepared statement.
Other scholarship winners include first-place winner Aidan Lin of Brophy College Preparatory in Phoenix, who took home $1,500; Caitlin Campos of Shadow Mountain High School in Phoenix, third place; Hayze Chilson of Payson High School in Payson, fourth place; and Nevaeh Livingston of Maricopa High School in Maricopa, fifth place.

Next year’s applications will open Friday, Jan. 1, 2021, for high school students in graduating classes of 2022 to 2025, residing and enrolled in school in Apache, Coconino, Gila, La Paz, Maricopa, Mohave, Navajo, Pinal, Yavapai or Yuma counties.
