The city of Goodyear is getting heartsy in anticipation of its upcoming 75th anniversary and needs a little help from its artist friends.
On Friday, Aug. 7, the city posted a call for art announcing it’s seeking artists from throughout Maricopa County to design and paint one of 10 themed fiberglass hearts that will be installed throughout the city in celebration of Goodyear’s 75th Anniversary early next year.
The 5- by 6-foot hearts will be accessible to pedestrians and will visible to vehicles. Placement is planned at the following locations:
According to the announcement, each heart should promote civic pride, include reference to the 75th Anniversary and be designed to represent a specific decade. Artists are encouraged to include historic visuals that focus on Goodyear, but also consider broader historic references (state, national and world).
Decades to be represented include 1940-1949, 1950-1959, 1960-1969, 1970-1979, 1980-1989, 1990-1999, 2000-2009, 2010-2019, 2020 and Goodyear’s future.
The project is open to all Maricopa County artists, artist teams and educational institutions working in a broad range of visual media. Those interested must submit a letter of interest, current resume and up to five digital images of their past work to the city no later than 3 p.m. Aug. 30, 2020.
A selection committee will select artists based on criteria that includes excellence of past work, plans for community outreach, ability to communicate a theme, and technical skill.
Finalists will be notified of their selection Sept. 15, 2020. They will be required to attend a project kick-off meeting to discuss logisticts as well as a Goodyear Arts & Culture Commission Public Art meeting for design approval before beginning painting in November.
Signage is expected to be installed in December, and an unveiling held in January 2021 in conjunction with 75th anniversary activities, according to the announcement.
Those chosen for the project will be receive $1,200 for community outreach, design, materials and time, according to the announcement. Each participating artist or team will be required to provide all materials to execute the painting of the artwork on the heart at their respective site, maintain a clean work environment onsite and coordinate community outreach efforts.
