Goodyear making appointments for household hazardous waste pickup
Posted
The city of Goodyear is accepting appointments to pick up hazardous waste from residents in the new year.
Residents who wish to have items picked up can register online at goodyearaz.gov through Friday, Jan. 8, for pickup between Monday, Jan. 11, and Friday, Jan. 29. Once registered via the city’s household hazardous waste page, residents will receive an email within two days confirming their designated pickup day.
Up to 20 pounds of hazardous household waste should be put in open, 16-by-16-by-12-inch boxes labeled HHW and placed near the resident’s garage door or carport by 6 a.m. on their collection day.
Items to be picked up should be in their original containers and sealed properly before being placed into the boxes, city officials said.
Tires, medical waste, ammunition and explosives, RV refrigerators containing ammonia, radioactive materials and large appliances will not be accepted.
Large appliances like washers, dryers, water heaters, stoves, dishwashers and evaporative coolers can be recycled on bulk trash pickup days.
Acceptable household items include aerosol cans, adhesives, ammonia, household batteries, bleach, CFL and fluorescent light bulbs, cooking oil, drain cleaners, cell phones, computers, fertilizer, fire extinguishers, flat-screen TVs, herbicides, hobby supplies, household cleaners, insecticides, kerosene, latex paint (10-gallon limit), mercury, oil-based paints, (10-gallon limit), pesticides and rodent killers, poisons, pool chemicals, propane tanks, rust preventatives, stains and varnishes, sealers, solvents and thinners, spray paint and weed killers.
Acceptable automotive items include automotive batteries, and up to five gallons of antifreeze, engine degreasers, engine fluids, gasoline and motor oil.
The city’s hazardous waste page also includes an alternative, drop-off option for those with scheduling conflicts or who have more than 20 pounds of items to recycle. The page also has an FAQ section with information on what to do with ammunition, appliances, batteries, explosives, prescription drugs and radioactive materials.
