Goodyear council to hear economic development update, discuss Prop. 207

Goodyear Economic Development Director Lori M. Gary and Greater Phoenix Economic Council President/CEO Chris Camacho will update the City Council on recent local and regional economic development activities and initiatives during its work session at 6  tonight, Sept. 21.

The presentation is for informational purposes only and no action will be taken. The public may attend in person at Goodyear Municipal Court and Council Chambers, 14455 W. Van Buren St., Suite B101 or watch via the city’s Facebook page or YouTube channel.

In the past five years, GPEC has assisted the city in locating 18 businesses in Goodyear, according to a staff report. That resulted in creation of 4,300 jobs and $2.4 billion in capital investment. Projects include Ball Corp., Chewy.com, Fairlife, XPO/Boeing and Microsoft.

Averaged over that five-year period, Goodyear has seen a 554:1 return-on-investment on newly generated taxes and revenues created by jobs and capital investment in our community in relation to our membership dues with the economic councils, the staff report states.

After the work session, the council will reconvene for a special meeting and possible executive session to discuss contractual negotiations regarding the city’s development agreement with Westcor/Macerich.

The council also will discuss Proposition 207, the Smart and Safe Arizona Act, on the Nov. 3 ballot. Prop. 207 seeks to legalize the sale and use of recreational marijuana for those 21 and older, and to establish a 16% sales tax on the sale of recreational marijuana and recreational marijuana products.
