How does your desert garden grow?

The city of Goodyear is offering a series of six free virtual water conservation classes for residents interested in growing and maintaining gardens without using excess water. The classes, 5:30-7 p.m. Tuesdays beginning Oct. 6, will be led by arborist Jonathan Manning.

Participants who receive their water from the city of Goodyear can earn a $50 Desert Dollars gift card to purchase desert plants at a local nursery by taking a survey after completing a class, according to information at goodyearaz.gov. Gift cards are limited to one per household for the series.

Set Your Water Timer on Oct. 6 will teach students how to take control of their irrigation controller by setting it correctly and changing it seasonally to fit their specific plants and soil.

Plants that Attract Hummingbirds and Butterflies on Oct. 13 will teach students about plants that draw these colorful pollinators to home gardens, and plants that allow them to complete their life cycle.

Pruning for Beauty and Health on Oct. 20 will detail when to prune for the health, beautify and safety of plants, and when it’s unnecessary or event harmful.

Irrigation System Maintenance and Repair on Oct. 27 will teach gardeners how to properly maintain watering systems to prevent leaks and other potential problems.

Trees for Arid Yards on Nov. 10 will discuss the pros and cons of planting different tree species and tips on special care.

Cactus for Everyone on Nov. 17 will go over variety selection, planting and potting, watering, pruning, fertilizing and propagation.
