As Buckeye prepares to reopen the Joe Foss Shooting Range this fall, the city is hiring a facility coordinator to oversee operations, safety, and programming at the site.
The full-time position, which pays between $60,881 and $91,374 annually, will be responsible for managing the range’s public programs, coordinating events, and developing community partnerships. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 19.
The coordinator will oversee the daily operations of the facility, including firearm safety workshops, special events, and partnerships with local organizations. The role also includes supervising staff, handling facility communications, and promoting range programs through social media and public outreach.
The hiring process follows a 20-year agreement between Buckeye and Maricopa County, which grants the city exclusive management rights for the range. The range, located at Buckeye Hills Regional Park, has been closed since July 2024 after the expiration of a previous operating agreement. The city will take over operations on Jan. 1 and plans to reopen the facility to the public in the fall.
“We heard loud and clear: people want this range back open to the public as soon as possible,” said Maricopa County Supervisor Steve Gallardo. “But look, we had to do it right.” Gallardo emphasized that the partnership with Buckeye ensures long-term stability for the range.
Under the agreement, Buckeye will manage both public access and law enforcement training at the facility, which will be open to the public at least three days a week.
“I appreciate the City of Buckeye’s willingness to step up and manage this valuable public asset,” said former County Supervisor Clint Hickman. “Maricopa County Parks and Recreation has worked diligently over the last several months to identify and make needed repairs to the range, and we are confident it is in good condition for law enforcement training and, eventually, public use.”
Mayor Eric Orsborn said reopening the range aligns with the city’s outdoor recreation goals.
“The Joe Foss Shooting Range adds another exceptional recreational amenity for our residents while supporting the outdoor adventure goals outlined in our Parks and Recreation Master Plan,” Orsborn said. “This facility provides a safe and controlled environment for recreational shooters, helping preserve our deserts and ensuring a more responsible use of outdoor spaces.”
