The City of Avondale will host a free community event on Saturday, May 3, to mark Cinco de Mayo with an evening of cultural activities, music, and family-friendly entertainment.
Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. While the date is a minor holiday in Mexico, it has become widely observed in the United States as a day recognizing Mexican culture and heritage.
The event will take place from 6 to 10 p.m. in Old Town Avondale along Historic Western Avenue. Programming includes live music, dance performances, food, games, and interactive exhibits reflecting Mexican traditions.
The Sam Garcia Library, located at 351 E. Western Ave., will feature “Kermes en la Biblioteca” offering carnival-style games and “Lotería” throughout the evening.
From 7 to 10 p.m., Ballet Folklórico dancers will perform traditional Mexican folk dances. Additional activities include piñata making, face painting, crafts, pony rides, a photo booth, and a car expo with a pinstriping demonstration. Axe throwing and other games will also be available.
Local restaurants will participate in a “Salsa Showdown,” where attendees can sample and vote on salsa offerings.
The event is open to the public and free to attend.
