Andrew Mesquita has been announced as the city of Avondale new Human Resources director.

Mesquita has more than two decades of experience providing human resources management and leadership in the public sector.

Before joining Avondale, Mesquita served as the chief human resources officer for the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office for four years.

Mesquita is a graduate of the W.P. Carey School of Business at Arizona State University with a bachelor’s degree in management. Mesquita is also a graduate of Valle Del Sol’s Hispanic Leadership Institute.

“As our organization continues to grow, Avondale is fortunate to have Andy Mesquita join the team, and we look forward to the expertise and leadership he will bring to our HR department,” said Avondale City Manager Ron Corbin. “With his impressive public sector and employee relations background, he will be a great asset to the leadership team in the city.”

According to the city, a human resource director role is planning, implementing, and directing the day-to-day operations of the Human Resources department, which includes the major functions of recruitment, testing, compensation, classification, equal employment opportunity, employee development and training, employee relations, labor relations, and much more.

Also among their duties is dealing with employee issues and conducting investigations, being involved in the recruitment and hiring of new personnel, and supervising staff within the Human Resources Department.

“I am humbled and honored for the privilege to serve as HR Director for the City of Avondale. I look forward to collaborating with and supporting city leaders and employees to ensure we continue to provide the greatest level of service possible to our residents and community.”

Mesquita will oversee a team of 15 staff, along with the operations of the Avondale Human Resources Department, comprising recruitment, maintaining fair and equitable classification and compensation, and maintaining the City’s employee benefits program.

Mesquita started his position for Avondale earlier this month. According to city documents, an HR director receives an annually salary ranging from $135,969.23 to $197,155.38.
