Avondale bests Goodyear, Surprise in donut eating competition

The city of Goodyear hosted West Valley police officers and firefighters in a national donut day eating competition Friday.

Goodyear’s police and fire department put out the challenge to nearby city departments, hoping to raise money for the Arizona Special Olympics.

Surprise and Avondale both heeded the call, with Avondale eventually coming out victorious.

Avondale police officer John Kendall took home the donut-eating champion belt for the second year in a row.

“I'm still hungry,” Kendall said.

Kendall’s family loudly cheered for him as he devoured a tray of over a dozen donuts in mere minutes.

Avondale Firefighter Osvaldo Magana, a rookie to the challenge, helped the donut-eating veteran Kendall by downing a tray of donuts himself.

“He trained me well, that's what he did,” Magana said.

Goodyear fire chief Santiago Rodriguez said the event benefits a cause important to public safety officials in the valley.

“The purpose of the National Donut Day eating challenge is to support a cause which is near and dear to the hearts of law enforcement statewide… the AZ Special Olympics. While supporting a great organization, we can have a little fun with this event,” he said.

The host, Hidden Bakery, sold $1394 worth of donuts, which will go on to benefit the charity.

“We are thankful to Hidden Bakery for hosting; we hope the public will come out and support their favorite team and do so knowing they are supporting the special athletes that mean so much to us,” Rodriguez said.
