All legal fireworks permitted for use in Arizona ahead of Fourth of July holiday

Goodyear and Litchfield Park residents wondering why it’s already beginning to sound like the Fourth of July in their neighborhoods should be aware that beginning today, June 24, through Tuesday, July 6, additional fireworks that are legal in Arizona are permitted for use by residents.

Novelty fireworks such as snakes, sparklers, party poppers and snappers are sanctioned for use all year. Ground spinners, sparkling wheels and fountain-style fireworks are permitted for use at the Fourth of July as well as over the New Year’s holiday.

Not permitted are fireworks that detonate in the air, including sky rockets, bottle rockets, reloadable shell devices, firecrackers, Roman candles, aerials and single-tube devices with reports.

Fire experts recommend that people stick to professional fireworks shows like those scheduled Sunday, July 4, in both Goodyear and Litchfield Park.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, fireworks started an estimated 19,500 fires across the country in 2018, including 1,900 structures, 500 vehicle fires and 17,100 outside and other fires.

Those fires resulted in five deaths, 46 civilian injuries and $105 million in direct property damage.

That same year, according to NFPA’s fireworks fires and injuries report, U.S. hospital emergency rooms treated more than 9,000 people for fireworks-related injuries. Half of those were to people’s extremities, and 34% were to eyes and other parts of the head.

Children younger than 15 accounted for more than a third of the injuries.

NFPA offers the following ways to get into the patriotic spirit without using fireworks:

  • Light up the night with glow sticks and necklaces, available at many local stores.
  • Make a statement with noise-makers, available at local party stores, or make your own.
  • Screen movies outdoors in the backyard.
  • Have a good-natured “battle” with red, white and blue “silly string.”
  • Make a patriotic craft.
  • Celebrate America’s birthday with a red, white and blue birthday cake.

Independence Day shows

Fireworks displays are returning to Goodyear and Litchfield Park Sunday, July 4, after being canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Goodyear will again host its annual Star Spangled Fourth celebration at Goodyear Ballpark, 1933 S. Ballpark Way. Gates open at 6 p.m. and fireworks are scheduled to begin at 9. The event will also feature family-friendly activities, music by Valley musician Chauncey Jones, patriotic giveaways and 75th anniversary surprises.

For more information on the event, click here.

Litchfield Park will start its celebration with the annual Splash Bash at the Litchfield Park Recreation Center pool from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., then the fun will move to the Wigwam’s Blue Course, 415 N. Old Litchfield Road, for the Red, White & Boom celebration at 7 p.m.
