Veterans Affairs Committee chairman Jeff Turney retires with honors

Posted

Jeff Turney, chair of the Glendale Chamber of Commerce’s Military and Veterans Affairs Committee, retired from his position last month and was honored by the Chamber and by Glendale Mayor Jerry Weiers.

Mr. Turney is an Air Force veteran who served at Glendale’s Luke Air Force Base and is a sergeant for the Glendale Police Department.

“It was an honor to chair the Military & Veterans Affairs Committee for Glendale’s Chamber of Commerce,” Mr. Turney said. “Over the past several years the committee was able to spearhead innovative programs and events that assisted veterans in need. We were committed to bringing our businesses and our community together in ways that honored the sacrifices made by the women and men protecting our nation’s freedoms.”

Mr. Turney reflected on the accomplishments the committee made for local veterans under his leadership, including the start of the Stand Up 4 Vets event at Glendale Community College, which is both a veteran’s job fair and a way for veterans to connect with local resources such as health care and counseling, and the start of Mayor Weiers’ Big Dog Run event, a motorcycle ride that allows participants to ride on a runway at Luke AFB, inside State Farm Stadium and around the ISM Raceway in Avondale. Benefits from the ride go toward Arizona State’s Veterans Education Fund.

“I swell with pride when I look back over the events we managed or supported, such as the Thunderbird Park Flag raising, the multiple Induction ceremonies, multiple Stand Up 4 Vets, several Mayor’s Big Dog motorcycle runs, the Treasure House flag pole installation, multiple veterans day celebrations, the U.S. Flag repurposing program, and the Military Appreciation breakfast,” Mr. Turney said. “They all brought our community together in patriotic ways and showed respect for those individuals who fought and are fighting to maintain our way of life.”

Mr. Weiers, who is a member of the Military & Veterans Affairs Committee said Mr. Turney has “a heart as big as Texas.”

Mr. Turney said is not slowing down but moving onto new adventures, including serving as the vice president for Angels on Patrol, a group that helps community members in times of crisis on the request of local police officers, and serving on the school board for the Academy of Math & Science charter schools.

“I continue to help our veteran community by working with Operation Enduring Gratitude,” Mr. Turney added. “When Glendale city code inspectors find elderly or disabled veterans with code violations, they call me and OEG helps me help them, ...even working with Phoenix inspectors with veterans in their city.”
