A suspect is in custody following an officer involved shooting in Glendale.

Police say that just after 3 p.m. on July 13, an officer was getting off duty from the Gateway station near 83rd Avenue and Maryland. The officer was driving away from the station when he observed a vehicle driving recklessly in the area of 8600 W. Cardinal Way. The vehicle hit a curb, street sign and street light.

The officer called 911 to report the collision and followed the vehicle down the canal. Near the area of 7900 W. Missouri, the suspect got out of the vehicle while it was still in motion, and the vehicle continued moving and crashed into the canal.

The suspect was confronted by the officer. According to police, the suspect allegedly pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the officer. The rounds missed the officer, who in return shot back but did not hit the suspect.

The suspect took off on foot and the officer followed.

The officer eventually lost sight of the suspect and a perimeter was set up.

The suspect stole a bicycle in a nearby park and left the area. A K-9 track team was started, which located the bicycle and some clothing that the suspect had been wearing.

The suspect was later taken into custody near 7700 W. Medlock after a caller reported seeing him.

There were no injuries reported during this incident.

The suspect is a 24-year-old male and is in custody. There are no other outstanding suspects.

The investigation is ongoing.
