SRP customers can get two shade trees to reduce energy use

Posted

Salt River Project is offering two free trees to eligible customers to help create shade and reduce energy use for their property.

Eligible customers must:

  • Attend a virtual workshop;
  • Be a current SRP electric customer;
  • Have a legal right to planting trees on property;
  • Call 811 prior to planting to locate utility lines;

Eligible customers can choose two 2- to 6-foot saplings of Palo Verde, Native Mesquite, Thornless Mesquite, Willow Acacia, Desert Willow or Lilac Chaste.

Workshops are held at 10 a.m. Saturday, June 28, noon Thursday, July 24, and  10 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 23.

Strategically planted shade trees can reduce energy use by up to 25% by lowering indoor temperatures, SRP officials said. They also help combat the urban heat island effect and support local biodiversity.

Shade Tree Program is a community partnership with Trees Matter, Phoenix-based nonprofit dedicated to environmental education and urban forestry. Each year, the program provides more than 5,000 desert-adapted shade trees, and to date, it has distributed over 65,000 trees to more than 30,000 SRP customers.
