Robbery suspect in custody after returning to same Glendale store months later

Glendale police have made an arrest in an armed robbery at a liquor store in October.

Samuel Robert Rivard, 31, faces charges of armed robbery and drug possession.

The incident happened Oct. 15 at Habib’s Liquor Drive Thru near 63rd Avenue and Bell Road. The caller had advised that the business had been robbed at gunpoint. Police said the suspect stole cash and cigarettes.

The victim clerk provided a detailed description of the suspect, to include multiple tattoos.

Glendale police on Dec. 13 posted about the incident, asking for the public to help identify the suspect.

On Wednesday, Jan. 22, the victim clerk was again working at the store when the alleged suspect came up to the drive-thru window on a bicycle. In a Facebook post, the clerk said he recognized the bicyclist as the suspect who robbed him in October.

"It was like a slow motion movie," the clerk told the Daily Independent via Facebook on Thursday, Jan. 23. "His face was like... is this the guy I robbed and I’m sure mine was like... is this the guy that robbed me. As he turned I saw his tattoo and then I knew 100% it was him. As he rode away on his bike I told him to come back and that I had cigarettes for him. Then he started riding away faster and I grabbed my phone and chased him while chasing him I was on the phone with 911. A Glendale police officer came to my work about an hour later and before he said anything I told him just tell me you caught him and he replied... He’s arrested. #bestdayever"

According to court documents, responding officers spotted the bicyclist along Bell Road near 59th Avenue. Officers recognized the tattoos on the bicyclist as those matching the suspect in the October robbery.

Police detained the man, identifying him as Samuel Robert Rivard. He was allegedly found in possession of several drugs, records state.

He declined to speak with police without a lawyer.

Mr. Rivard was jailed in lieu of a $10,000 bond with court dates Jan. 30 and Feb. 3.

According to Maricopa County Sheriff's Office records, Mr. Rivard had been booked into jail in December for other charges but was eventually released.
