Ray Malnar selected as Glendale's new vice mayor

Posted

Sahuaro District City Councilman Ray Malnar was selected by his fellow Council members this month as Glendale’s new vice mayor. His one-year term as vice mayor will last until January 2021.

Mr. Malnar was elected to Council in a special election and sworn in November 2015. He was reelected in 2016. His current term ends January 2021, and he will face reelection again this fall.

“During the City Council meeting on January 14, 2020, I was honored to be elected as vice mayor of the city of Glendale,” Mr. Malnar said. “I promise to fulfill the responsibilities of the office to the best of my abilities.”

As vice mayor, Mr. Malnar will be responsible for performing the duties of Glendale’s mayor, Jerry Weiers, during the mayor’s absence.

The vice mayor is chosen from the city’s six non-mayoral Council members to a one-year term. Council has adopted an informal policy to cycle the vice mayor among Council members. Mr. Malnar succeeds Yucca District Councilwoman Joyce Clark as vice mayor.

“Ray has proven himself to be a reliable and steady servant to our city over his tenure on our Council,” said Ms. Clark, the outgoing vice mayor.

Mr. Malanar was elected in a 6-0 Council vote. The vote was made while Mayor Weiers had stepped away from the dais.

Mr. Malnar has extensive experience in finance, accounting, information systems, general business management, government affairs, politics, training and facility maintenance.

For more than 20 years, Mr. Malnar has owned and operated a valley-wide flooring maintenance and restoration company following a successful career in corporate accounting and finance management at UPS.

Mr. Malnar holds an MBA, a BA in Speech Communication, and a BS in Finance from the University of Utah.
