Q&A: Meet Glendale Firefighter recruit Luke Toman
Posted
Independent Newsmedia
What year did you graduate from Mountain Ridge High School?: 2013.
What years did you attend Glendale Community College?: I attended GCC in 2012 when I was a junior in high school. I took Fire Science and Haz Mat classes. Then in 2015 I took my EMT class.
When did you know you wanted to join Glendale Fire, and what led you to this career?: When I was little the Fire Department saved my mom’s life. After that I decided I wanted to be a firefighter. Every year for Halloween I dressed as a firefighter and never wore another costume. Now I get to put on the turnouts for real. I have watched the yellow fire trucks respond to calls since I was in the second grade and have wanted to be a part of the Glendale Fire Department. I worked on an ambulance in Glendale for four years before I got hired and they always treated me like family. I knew this was where I wanted to be and the people I wanted to work with.
What’s it like being a recruit in training?: Being a recruit is the hardest, best thing I have ever done. It is exhausting and difficult but it is worth every minute.
What has been the best part of your firefighting journey to this point?: The best part of this journey was the moment I got the phone call telling me I was being hired by GFD and would be in the next academy class. I was smiling from ear to ear, my dream had come true.
