MLK March on West returns to Glendale's ASU West campus Wednesday

Posted

The annual Martin Luther King Jr. March on West takes place 11 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Jan. 22 at ASU West, 4701 W. Thunderbird Road, Glendale.

The march is a tradition at Arizona State University’s West campus that dates back to 1991. Hundreds of middle school students participate in interactive educational presentations about the civil rights movement before preparing posters and recreating the historical 1963 March on Washington D.C. At the end of the march, spectators will hear the inspirational “I Have a Dream” speech, reenacted by ASU faculty member Charles St. Clair.

The public is invited to join the MLK March on West and experience the reenactment. The march starts 11 a.m. at the Paley Gates in front of campus and ends in the Sands/Kiva Courtyard. The event is free and open to all students, faculty, staff and community members. Visitor parking on campus costs $3 per hour.

Volunteers are needed for shifts 8 a.m.-2 p.m. Volunteers receive a free MLK March on West T-shirt, breakfast for the early shifts and lunch for the later shifts. Those interested should email westevents@asu.edu.
