Mayor Jerry Weiers and Yucca District Councilwoman Joyce Clark will face challengers in the election this fall. Vice Mayor Ray Malnar from the Sahuaro District and Cactus District Councilman Ian Hugh are each running for re-election uncontested. The filing deadline was Monday, April 6.

The primary election is Tuesday, Aug. 4. If any council candidate earns a majority of the vote in that election, they are elected. If not, the top two vote-getters head to a run-off in the general election on Tuesday, Nov. 3. The deadline to register to vote for the Aug. 4 primary is Monday, July 6.

Mayor Weiers is being challenged by Glendale resident Michelle Robertson. Ms. Robertson ran as a Democrat for Maricopa County superintendent of schools in 2016, losing 49-51 to Republican Steve Watson. Mr. Weiers has been mayor since first being elected in 2012 and is seeking his third term in office. Prior to becoming mayor, he served in the Arizona House of Representatives for eight years.

Ms. Clark is being challenged by Bryce Alexander, who owned a now-closed art gallery in downtown Glendale called Adair’s of Glendale Art Gallery.Ms. Clark is seeking her sixth term in office. She has served on City Council since 1992, with two four-year gaps from 1996 to 2000 and from 2012 to 2016.

Mr. Malnar is seeking his second full-term on Council. He was first elected as the Sahuaro District Councilman in a recall election to replace Councilman Gary Sherwood in 2015, defeating Mr. Sherwood 54-46. He won re-election in 2016, running unnopposed. Mr. Malnar was appointed vice mayor in January. The position of vice mayor is served in one-year terms which are rotated among City Council members. Mr. Malnar also served on the governing board of the Western Maricopa Education Center in Arizona from 2009 to 2016.

Mr. Hugh initially served on the Council from 1986 to 1991, first when Council races were city-wide and then  as the Barrel  District representative. He was first elected as Cactus District councilman in 2012. He is seeking his third straight term in the Cactus District, running unopposed all three times. Mr. Hugh the Glendale Union High School District School Board from 2004-2012, serving as President in 2011-2012.
